Chasing Lions in South Africa

5th June 2016

I wanted to do something to mark my 30th birthday, I never in a million years thought that this would be what I’d do. Safari was unequivocally the holiday of a lifetime. To be able to share the experience with my closest friends and family was the cherry on top! Makanyi Lodge, South Africa’s newest safari outpost was home for us during our trip. Imagine a 5 star Animal Kingdom for adults, double it and you’ve got Makanyi. Whatever your budget or age, I urge you to go on safari at least once in your life. There truly is nothing else quite like it.

There really are no words to do my experience justice so I’m going to leave it to the photos to do the talking.

Looking out on the Jurassic Park landscape on the short flight from Johannesburg, make sure you nab the window seat…

Not your average airport, a tractor pulls the luggage round to the terminal which is a little shack clad in wood and animal skins

I wasn’t sure about showering out in the open like this at first, but believe me it’s seriously invigorating! And hearing the hippo in the swamp guffaw throughout just made it all the more magical!

Spot the leopard! It’s impossible to describe the beauty of the animals coats. The markings on this leopard were unbelievably perfect. Just look at how she blends into the landscape.

My favourites; the way they amble through the bushes is so graceful even though they’re such awkward animals, breathtaking.

Incredibly sad that these will soon be extinct, even sadder that their biggest threat is man. Makanyi is a 100% non-profit organisation with all proceeds going to the Save the Rhino fund.

Following lions to a stand-off with 300 buffalo, the most exhilarating experience of my life! They were hungry but the buffalo’s stood their ground.

Our wheels…at Makanyi you do two drives per day, one shortly after sunrise and the other over sunset

Night drive, we did one of these during our trip. It didn’t last long though as shortly after this the heavens opened and we all got soaked!!!!

It was hard to know what to pack as I really didn’t know what to expect but what I took worked pretty well. I took a selection of dungarees, denim shorts, khaki pants and then loads of layers as the temperatures changes quickly; vests, t-shirts, shirts and scarves.
